– Elder sister, younger sister. Number one and number two. – Who is number one? – You. Course. (drums) – Hello and welcome to beneath the crown. I’m Laura Jackson and you
are in the right place if you want to delve deeper
into the true stories that inspired season three of our show. Lets roll back the years
to join Princess Margaret on her memorable tour of the
United States of America. (video reel) (jazz music) – It’s 1965 and while the
world is being conquered by four lads called The Beatles, Princess Margaret and Lord
Snowdon are too busy partying to do much in the way of royal duties. – Quite right. – [Laura] So as a public show of unity they embarked on an intent three week tour of the United States. Being an informal visit, the 12 members of the royal party had to take commercial flights. (airplane engine whooshing) Margaret became only the
second senior royal to do so. (classical jazz music) (camera shutter) Margaret visiting for the first time was greeted very warmly indeed. (crowd cheers) Still there was an outcry over
the entire 64,000 pound cost of the tour, roughly 1.2 million in today’s money. (jazz music) The first few days of
the tour in San Francisco saw Margaret and Tony on a
whirlwind of social engagements and sightseeing, often
drawing large crowds. They attended a fashion show to promote British clothing. It’s not often you see models
curtsying on the catwalk. Fashion was very close
to Margaret’s heart. She traveled to America with 79 suitcases of British made garments. The couple was soon
mingling with the stars at Universal studios. Joining actors Paul
Newman and Julie Andrews on set with legendary
director Alfred Hitchcock. (jazz music) (camera shutter) A, “Welcome to Hollywood”
bash was thrown for them, including guests such as Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Legendary “Wizard of Oz” star Judy Garland was also in attendance. And Margaret couldn’t
resist asking for a song. – Music. – Royal protocol requires
no one to leave a party before any royal in attendance. Not ideal when you’re a film
star with an early start and your royal guest is a party animal. Frank Sinatra and Mia
Farrow managed to sneak out discreetly through the kitchen. But they were reportedly granted approval from Margaret before hand. The late nights soon took
their toll on Margaret who lost her voice with laryngitis. (airplane whooshing) The next leg of the tour saw
an unwell Margaret and Tony head to Arizona for a
little rest and relaxation. (coughs) The experience was very
unusual for the royals and provided some rather
peculiar photo opportunities. (jazz music) But at least Tony got to play a cowboy. More late nights led to a
series of canceled engagements blamed by the press on royal hangovers. – (exhales) I look hideous. – You look a bit tired, it’s only to be expected after your heroics. And now you must sleep. (kiss sound) – With the tour at the halfway mark, off the exhausted couple
flew to Washington. A tour of various landmarks followed, including the Lincoln Memorial. But the tour took a turn for the worse, as a New York Times publish a story accusing the royal party of leaving a trail of unpaid
bills behind in Arizona. The British embassy reportedly
stepped in to settle up and avoid further embarrassment. Attention turned to the White House dinner with President Johnson. – Your royal highness. – President Johnson. (jazz music) – The event went down a treat (camera shutter) as the couples hit it off and
danced long into the night. (jazz music) (people laughing and chatting) And so the couple moved on
to the final leg of the tour in New York. (jazz music) The adoring crowds were still out in force with 1,500 fans turning
up to see the Snowdon’s visit the Empire State Building. New york engagements included a visit to the United Nations headquarters, a trip to The Museum of Modern Art, and an evening charity ball for the Winston Churchill Memorial Fund. The royal family, the ultimate dance floor filler. With the tour drawing to a close a farewell supper and dance
was held for Margaret and Tony on Tuesday the 23rd of November, at the prestigious Four Seasons
Restaurant, in Manhattan. Margaret was still
going strong at 3:00 a.m when she ordered a full cooked breakfast. Spare a thought for those
who were unable to leave, because of the royal protocol. And so after 21 days of late nights the royal party departed. Margaret had won lesion of
new admirers in the U.S, and the couple have
patriotically championed British industry and
interest while in town. The fashion critics were
less than impressed. In an article widely circulated, Women’s Wear Daily called Margaret’s style a schizophrenic mixture of chic
and sheer fashion disaster. Ouch. The royal party boarded
another commercial flight and were hit with a excess
baggage fee of 5,000 pounds, that’s over 95,000
pounds in today’s money. – It is my burden. (jazz music) (airplane whooshes) – Extravagant expenditure aside, the couple returned as
darlings of the United States. But while bridges were built abroad, the cracks continue to widen between Margaret and Tony at home. (jazz music dramatically ends)
Tony seemed like a nice guy. Always smiling.
I would like to see at least one episode of the Crown dealing with a Canadian issue (patriation of the Constitution).
Thank God this came as the second episode! I was bored already by the new queen. HBC is easily the MVP this season, along with Josh O’Connor.
Geweldig
I hope Ralph feines (hope I'm spelling it right) who played voldermort and plays the new M in 007 ends up being Philip in season 5 if they make a 5th season
When I heard clancy Brown talking as lyndon b johnson all I could picture was Mr krabs saying "hey spongebob boyo I'm the president of the United states"
Margaret was a dreadful drunken snob
Please bring season 4…please hurry…
So Helena was much cooler than her in real life
Why should Americans care about British Royal protocol and when they can or can’t leave an event?!
What is this shitty protocol of not leaving a party before the royal.
As a little girl, I dreamt of becoming a princess. Thank god that dream did not come true. Imagine the burdens of protocol, dos & donts, not being to follow your dreams and especially the downer of not being able to love without The Crowns consent. 😕
Am I the only one who thinks the actors they hired for this season are way too old?
I met her in 1986, if she was born black in 1970s LA she'd of been a crack whore. I'm like her, instant gratification over longevity.
Iconic
79 items of luggage …… 50 of which contained her cigarettes and booze!
She played her role just as fabulous as the first one…but with more attitude mixed in with the pain she endured .
3:43 she looks so bored 😂
79 suitcases?! Indeed a self-indulgent spoiled bitch faced brat. Margaret would have been rather partying in Carribean, doing hard drugs and taking big Black cocks, as per usual!
Is Helena pregnant? Looked that way with her wardrobe .
Curious that the host of this video didn't mention Tucson and only said Arizona when the map does show Tucson. Maybe she's afraid of mispronouncing the name of the city which has a silent 'c'?
Women wore such stupid hats! I remember my mother wearing that ludicrous headgear back then.
Oh gosh!!! Helena is Margaret 😍😍😍😍😍😍 I'm definitely watching this.
I was deeply impressed by the publics outpouring of indifference, when this uncaring and self-centred woman finally had the good grace to die.
https://youtu.be/jjG-J5Yksnw click on link you know you want to
At 3:51 looks like King George VI in a women's outfit
The Queen was so cold-hearted during the coal mine slides, appalling. They are brainwashed to have no feelings. Robots have higher EQ than British Royals.
1965 – San Francisco – when it was still clean.
The two American presidents portrayed in this series, season 3, were shown to be absolute jackasses. At least they were right about Johnson but neither are recognizable as who they are supposed to be in looks, manner, speech, anything.
In Spanish Please 🤞
Legend has it because Princess Margaret did not like Elizabeth Taylor and vice versa Elizabeth Taylor was stuck by the kitchen which you don't do to Elizabeth Taylor so she walked out with said Richard Burton with a quick to send Princess Margaret's I love jewellery but at least I bought mine whether that's true or not I honestly don't know but it does sound very funny if it were it would have been very funny
I love this show
Favorite episode of the season
What bitch this woman was.
You know who would have been perfect to play Princess Margaret? Benedict Cumberbatch’s wife, Sophie Hunter, looks just like her.
Having recently watch that episode of the show, I see the original clothes she wore was way more modest, simpler and less colourful than that in the show.
My guess, to make the sisters stand apart more.
who gives a f—
ABOLISH THE UK MONARCHY! CHILD MOLESTERS AND THIEVES THE BUNCH OF THEM!
As much as I love Helena Bonham Carter, she is too fat to play Princess Margaret. She looks like a stuffed sausage in her historically INACCURATE costumes. In order to give her any sort of a waistline, she is so tightly packed into an industrial grade girdle that she can barely move. What were they thinking with that garish floral monstrosity they put her in for the dinner at the White House? Nothing makes a fat woman look FATTER than a big print! They should've stuck to a dress like the one Margaret actually wore. It was MUCH more forgiving and flattering.
thought Helena Bonham-Carter as Margaret was bad casting
the must kept the old cast for this 3 season…because all the characters are ( almost in the entire season) in their 30's but all looks like people in their late fifties! Claire Foy is 35 , in fact one year older than the Queen Elizabeth in 1964, and Vanessa Kirby is 31 one year older than Princess Margaret in the same year, the same for Matthew Goode ( Armstrong Jones 41) and Matt Smith 38 (Prince Phillip) ..
I'm not crazy about how Helena is handling this role. I see Helena I don't see Margaret…
I Wonder if they'll have a scene in season 5 or 6 based on that time in Margaret's early 70s when she was so pissed (drunk) she stepped in a scalding hot bath and badly burnt her feet
When I heard that Helena Bonham Carter took the role of Margaret i was a bit surprised. But she gave an almost heroic performance which left me awestruck. I binged the whole 3rd series in just 2 days. And now…. waitie, waitie
En esta temporada les falló el casting para la princesa Margarita , nada que ver con la primera
Es mucha la diferencia entre la primera y estab
So annoyed by the new cast… How come the queen and her sister has BLACK eyes!! 🙄 The previous cast was amazing. Season 3 is not good as the previous..
No need to bring new "Old" cast to do a period of 10 years.. Oh where have tje smart makeup artists gone 🙄🙄
Imelda Staunton will play the Queen in Season 4.
She is a great actress, but I don’t like the fact that she doesn’t look like the real princess Margaret.
They all did a good job nevertheless this lady looks nothing like the queen’s sister and is very annoying. Bye!
I just finished watching season 3 and lived it!
What happens if you just decide to get up and leave her party
Part of me wished I had a lever to flip back the chair like they have on the Graham Norton Show LOL!
The dresses of Princess Margaret was different
Helena is seriously fit.
How about: The Full Story Behind Prince Andrew's Tour of the USA.
The Royals are so pointless…
in ss3 princess Margaret is shorter than ss2 and queen is taller than ss 2
Princess Margaret was very similar to Prince Andrew…. Big spenders and useless people
In 1964 Princess Margaret was only 34 years old. She was still slim and still pretty. Yet she's being played by fat, frumpy and 53 year old Bonham Carter. Ridiculous!
I honestly don't see any resemblance of Helena with Margaret. She may be a good actress but her casting as margerat doesn't justify.
I was a bit worried about the new cast in season 3.
Both Olivia and Helena was outstanding.
Pity one have to wait for so long until season 4.
Bellatrix as Margaret is way less pretentious than the first Margaret. I wanted to like her but she was just such a snob.
79 suite cases……… I worked with Senior Staff person with SanFrancisco Ballet. He attended a function with her and said she was great just a absolute hoot.
Hopefully this insidiously corrupt Aristocracy and Institution will be hacked down to its ankles. Dynastic monarchy is not compatible with 21st century humanity . they are so extinct.
I love Olivia and Helena, but they should've done 3 seasons per set of cast instead of 2. Claire Foy and the gang should still be in Season 3 since the time line suggests the royals were still in their mid to late 30s. Then Olivia and Helena should have been in Season 4 to 6.
Not sure I'm liking the new cast but prince Phillip and prince Charles are spot on.
I always thought princess Margaret was taller than Princess Elizabeth. Beside Helena Bohnan Carter will remain in my mind as Queen Mother Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. And roles for Lindon Johnson, Prince Phillip and Prince Charles was excellent appointed.
I wonder why the movie didn’t replicate her actual outfits since the trip was so well documented?
As much as I like HBC, I don’t care for her as Margaret. Her not resembling Margaret at all is too distracting.
A Royal miscast. Liked her better in the first 2 seasons. Vanessa Kirby filled her out better, if at least gave her a heart.
When Margaret Bonham was prancing around, she seemed more like the actress and not the royal.
Tony the actor was worse, or was it the Royal?
Thanking God she was not the first child and Harry as well !
Was that Mr. Krabs playing Johnson??
Vanessa Kirby was a better Princess Margaret.
Margaret and Anne best part of season 3
Helena Bonham Carter is an excellent actress and this isn't her fault, but much of her performance as Margaret — when Margaret is out in public — is camp. And when not actual camp, just excessively churlish. Margaret was obviously a complex person, but I doubt this characterization does her justice. I also find the portrayal of Elizabeth disappointing — for just the opposite reason. I'm sure Olivia Coleman is an excellent actress but her facial expression barely changes throughout the 10 episodes of Season 3. I much preferred the previous cast.
Margaret was the star of season 3. Queen Elizabeth didn’t really have a story arc at all. Looking forward to season 4.
Is no one commenting on where they've put Washington on the map? 👀👀
She was too fat in the show
justo acabo de terminar de ver este capítulo (es el segundo) y abro el Youtube y el primer video en recomendados es este(? todo bien en casa(?
She was an awful person.
It's the Lincoln Monument, not memorial. Come on, Brits, get it right.
I don't feel like I'm watching a British royal family on this season. It's like another US drama made for Netflix.
I'm the biggest fan of the crown but this season is not good, sorry.
Hard to feel sorry for second daughters and sons. They get all the fun and rebellion. Sure they are "prisoners" in their own rights but someplace in earth: we people are struggling to feed ourselves, doing whatever is necessary. I don't feel sorry for their struggles because that's life. Boohoo, suck it up!
Where are all the family pedophiles? And their sex trafficking pedophile friends?
Helena Bonham Carter does not possess any of Princess Margaret's charm. What passes as charm dowadays is pretty artificial. And she needs to go on a diet. 🙁
The very least they could have done is getting a blue contact on Helena, since they were doing a close up on her as a blue eyed child and then a brown (?) eyed adult.
Interesting but wanted to know more about Margaret’s behaviour.. was she as nuts as she is made to be in the program
Idk why but i just cannot have any simpathy for margaret… just NOPE
Princess Margaret was indeed a very beautiful woman in her youth. People don’t realize that now because she lived very hard & fast.
Parasites
I'm sorry, while I think Helena is a great actress, I think she was miscast in this series. I can't make the connection between her and the previous Margaret in prior seasons
I thought “The Crown” made Margaret look like a Bawdy ,low class,Slut. HBC overplayed the role, but that’s my opinion & I’m not a Critic.
Princess margaret was 35 in 1965…….helena bonham carter is 53…….playing 35
I am such a huge fan of the crown and as all of you have, I waited so long for the new season just to be disappointed. It just didn't do anything for me like the previous seasons sad to say.
That red 'N' on Netflix's logo with the black background gives me a weird ass optical illusion…almost like 3-D.
Olivia Colman's acting was sublime. Soooo on point!
I went to Princess Margaret Senior Secondary 1981-1983 Surrey BC.
What is the map this clip is using? Something about that placement of Washington, especially, seems off or am I an idiot?
Cadê os olhos azuis???
