Insurances

Social insurance
If you come from an EU/EEA country, you are entitled to use the public medical services on the same basis as Swedish citizens for urgent medical care. In order to be eligible, you must be registered at a social insurance office in your home country and have a valid European Health Insurance Card, which will be issued upon request by your national social security authority.

Sweden has reciprocal agreements for public medical benefits with the following countries: Australia, Algeria, Estonia, Hungary (hospital care only), Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Quebec in Canada. Students from these countries need only to show their passport and a certificate from the social insurance office in their home country. For the reciprocal agreement to apply, the need for medical care must arise during, not prior to, your stay in Sweden.

Students from other countries or from EU/countries, with the exception of the Nordic countries, who are not registered with any social insurance office, must arrange their own insurance coverage before arrival. Medical treatment could be extremely expensive without any form of insurance. The cost of hospital treatment is a minimum of sek 2,800 per day.

It is also a good idea to have a thorough check-up at your dentist’s before leaving for Sweden.

Accident Insurance.
Students registered in the National Student Records Database attending state universities and university colleges are insured during school hours and during direct travel between their residence in Sweden and the school. The insurance covers personal injury as a consequence of accidents and certain cases of illness caused by infection.

Compensation is paid for medical care, medicine, physiotherapy, transportation and other expenses. You may also receive compensation for pain and suffering. If your injury becomes permanent (in the event of medical invalidity) the insurance will provide compensation for loss of income, deformity, and disability as well as for costs and inconvenience in general.

Other insurances.
Please note that neither the social nor the accident insurance cover your travel to Sweden or the time you spend in the country prior to registration. Thus, to be fully covered you will need travel insurance.
Before arrival, students should also arrange for insurance against loss and damage, as well as house and home insurance
